Making up voluntary fasts on other days. Sh.Muhammad ibn Hizaam

بســـم اللــه الرحــمــن الـرحـــيــم

Shaykh, Muhammad ibn Hizaam -may Allaah preserve him- was asked the following question:

Question

If it's recommended to make up for missed voluntary fasts on other days, does that include specific voluntary fasts as well, such as the fast of 'Ashooraa (10th of Muharram) and the six days of Shawwaal?

📝 Answer

Fasting the six days of Shawwaal is confined to the month of Shawwaal, so whoever missed fasting in Shawwaal, has missed fasting them; because they are confined to Shawwaal. Nonetheless, he should fast voluntarily throughout other months as much as Allaah makes easy for him. Similarly, the fasts of 'Ashoora and 'Arafah are also confined; their virtue is confined (to a particular day). (If a person missed fasting them) he continues to fast voluntarily on other days.

Whoever missed fasting a specific voluntary fast on its appointed day, has missed fasting that day, and will consequently miss the reward of fasting that particular day. If he tries to make it up by fasting another day, he will be rewarding for fasting -inShaAllaah-, but he won't attain the same reward as the missed day, because its virtue is confined to that particular day.
