.Steps in giving D'awah to the people of the Book. Shaykh Abu Bilaal Al-Hadhramy

بســـم اللــه الرحــمــن الـرحـــيــم

Our Shaykh Abu Bilaal Al-Hadhramy- may Allah preserve him- was asked the following question on Friday night of 23rd rabee'uth thaani 1441:

📝🔹Question:

I am from the westerners and the vast majority of our village are Nasaara (Christians) therefore what is the pleasant, beautiful manner which i can adopt when calling them to enter into Islam?

📩🔸Answer:

The beautiful path is that which Allah has mentioned:

{"وَلَا تُجَـٰدِلُوۤا۟ أَهۡلَ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ إِلَّا بِٱلَّتِی هِیَ أَحۡسَنُ..."}

And argue not with the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians), unless it be in (a way) that is better (with good words and in good manner, inviting them to Islamic Monotheism with His Verses).
(Surah Al-Ankabut, 46)

And likewise:

{"وَمَنۡ أَحۡسَنُ قَوۡلࣰا مِّمَّن دَعَاۤ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ وَعَمِلَ صَـٰلِحࣰا..."}

And who is better in speech than he who [says: "My Lord is Allah (believes in His Oneness)," and then stands straight (acts upon His Order), and] invites (men) to Allah's (Islamic Monotheism), and does righteous deeds.
(Surah Fussilat, 33)

And likewise the ayaat that indicate to giving dawah in the best manner, and knowledge:

{" قُلۡ هَـٰذِهِۦ سَبِیلِیۤ أَدۡعُوۤا۟ إِلَى ٱللَّهِۚ عَلَىٰ بَصِیرَةٍ أَنَا۠ وَمَنِ ٱتَّبَعَنِیۖ..."}

Say (O Muhammad ﷺ): "This is my way; I invite unto Allah (i.e. to the Oneness of Allah - Islamic Monotheism) with sure knowledge, I and whosoever follows me (also must invite others to Allah i.e. to the Oneness of Allah - Islamic Monotheism) with sure knowledge.
(Surha Yusuf, 108)

So the first thing (you are in need of) before giving dawah is knowledge, and insight, and likewise knowing the condition of the people you're giving dawah to, then after that comes the dawah to Allah The Most High.
 In addition, that which the Prophet ﷺ indicated to Mu'ath,

(إنك تأتي أهل كتاب فليكن أول ما تدعوهم إليه شهادة ألا إله إلا الله)
"Verily you are going to the people of the book, so let the first thing you call them to, the testification that none has the right to be worshipped in truth except Allah."

So you gradually advance when giving dawah to the people of the book just like the Prophet ﷺ commanded Mu'ath with.
 Also, you should be mindful of the ayah mentioned previously:

{"وَلَا تُجَـٰدِلُوۤا۟ أَهۡلَ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ إِلَّا بِٱلَّتِی هِیَ أَحۡسَنُ..."}
And argue not with the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians), unless it be in (a way) that is better (with good words and in good manner, inviting them to Islamic Monotheism with His Verses).
(Surah Al-Ankabut, 46)

For verily you're now in the stage of giving dawah to Allah The Most High so use good methods (to preach), and do not say to them:
 "you're people of the fire, and your such and such" naming their traits which they have with them in reality, however you are in a situation of giving dawah.

"فَقُولَا لَهُۥ قَوۡلࣰا لَّیِّنࣰا لَّعَلَّهُۥ یَتَذَكَّرُ أَوۡ یَخۡشَىٰ
"And speak to him mildly, perhaps he may accept admonition or fear Allah."
(Surah Ta-Ha, 44)

So have good elegance of style and mild mannered speech when calling to Allah The Most High, and perhaps Allah may guide by way of you, whom He wills.

"لأن يهدي الله بك رجلا واحدا خير لك من حمر النعم."
"For Allah to give guidance to one man by way of you, is better than red camels."

And likewise the Prophet ﷺ said to Ali:

" امض على رسلك وادعهم إلى شهادة ألا إله إلا الله "
'Proceed slowly, and call them to the shahadah that none has the right to be worshipped (in truth) except Allah.'

Do not look around (out of despair), continue, and call them (to Allah) with gentleness and mildness until they respond and accept. And if they accept then how wonderful is that for you.
You will be the one profiting for verily Allah The Most High will put all of their actions on your scale of good deeds, everything they do and establish from obedience, all of it on your scale of good deeds because you were the reason (after Allah) for them entering Islam.

So take things step by step with them, and act upon the hadith of Mu'ath May Allah be pleased with him, while being mindful of the ayah that we pointed to beforehand.

You will be the successful, by the permission of Allah.

Furthermore, knowing the condition of the those whom your giving dawah is a matter of great importance.

"إنك تأتي قوما أهل كتاب"
'Verily you are going to a community from the people of the book.'

Meaning that they are not an ignorant folk rather they possess knowledge, so be aware and make your preparations, and be gradual with them.

"فليكن أول ما تدعوهم إليه..."
'So let the first thing you call them to...'

Firstly, call them to the Tawheed, to the Tawheed of Allah The Most High, and do not start with other affairs that shaytaan has beautified for you or that came from the influence of the Ikwhan al muslimeen. Establish upon them the Tawheed of Allah The Most High, that which the prophets did.
If they affirm the Tawheed and they leave of At-tandeed ( associating partners with Allah), either with E'sa عليه السلام or with Uzair or other than that from what they believe in them, then rejoice with goodness after that.
Then, after that everything will become easier, from matters of the salah, fasting etc.

Furthermore, invite them by way of adopting lofty mannerisms, for this is from dawah and it is from the greatest form of dawah, for indeed the Prophet ﷺ succeeded in his dawah, due to what he possessed of lofty mannerisms and he is the one was sent to perfect the noble manners.
So using noble manners is from the greatest and also quickest means of of reaching those whom your giving dawah to, and it has a great affect.

And we advise with patience, if you intend to establish this great obligation of calling these devoted disbelievers (to Islam), then we advise you with patience. For the matter is difficult.
 At this present time we struggle when calling the Muslims to leave sins, they are not disbelievers and yet we find difficulty in doing so, so how about giving dawah to devote disbelievers, there is no doubt that this affair is more difficult, it will require more patience.
