The ruling of not using hena for women in finder nails. (english/arabic)

Our Shaykh Abu Bilaal Al-Hadhramy- may Allah preserve him- was asked the following question on 25th Jamaada Al-Awwal 1441(20th January 2020):

📝🔹Question: 

The Questioner says: What is the ruling of a woman leaving her finger nails plain without applying hena because some women are extremely critical of us for doing so. They say this is imitating men, is this correct?

📩🔸Answer: 

I do not think it reaches the extent of imitating men. Henna is a form of decoration, and beautification is mustahab (preferable) for women in general.

We do not say hena is mustahab, rather, hena is a form of decoration which it is befitting for a women to take interest in - especially if she is married; in which case she must take an interest in self grooming and beautification for her husband and the use of  henna is a means of beautification.

As for individual beauty products; they are not to be deemed mustahab in and of themselves in all cases. 

If there is to be any criticism it is to be for a married woman who stops maintaining herself for her husband, not upon a woman for not using specific beauty products.

The hadith:

["كان ﷺ يكره أن يرى المرأة ليس بيدها أثر الحناء و الخضاب “]

He (i.e. the Prophet ﷺ) disliked to see a woman with no trace of hena or dye on her hand.

Shayk AlBaani stated in 'The Chain of Weak and Fabricated (hadith)'(5/301):

Weak.

بســـم اللــه الرحــمــن الـرحـــيــمَ

📝🔹السؤال يقول : ما حكم ترك المرأة أظافرها بيضاء بدون حناء لأن بعض النساء ينكرن ذالك علينا بشدة ويقولن أن ذالك التشبه بالرجال فهل هذا صحيح؟

📩♦️الجواب:

ما أظنه التشبه بالرجال ولا يصل إلى التشبه بالرجال. فالحناء من الزينة والتجمل للمرأة مستحب بالجملة ولا نقول الحناء مستحب ولكن حناء من الزينة التي ينبغي للمرأة أن تعتني بها ولا سيما الزوجة تعتني بالزينة وتجمل لزوجها ومن التجمل استعمال الحناء.

وأما الأحاد التي تجمل به فلا يقال أنها مستحب على الإطلاق. يكون الإنكار إذا فيه إنكار على الامرأة المتزوجة على ترك الزينة لزوجها لا على خصوص ترك بعض أفراد الزينة

الحديث: “ كان يكره ﷺ أن يرى المرأة ليس بيدها أثر الحناء و الخضاب “ .

قال الألباني في “ السلسلة الضعيفة و الموضوعة “ ( 5/301 ) : ضعيف
